Chapter 11

Seth

My casts finally came off, and the doctor gave me the go-ahead to return to work. I’d asked Susan and Emery to stick around until I started back, and that day was today. I told them I’d have their final checks ready for them when I arrived home this evening.

Returning to my pre-accident health would take time, but I was almost there. I would have to engage in occupational therapy three times a week to get into the swing of things again, but I could handle that. What I couldn’t handle was sitting at home one more day, and that was why I’d insisted on returning to work.

I was starting to regret that decision now that Rupert was giving me the third degree.

He took a seat on the other side of my desk and folded his arms over his chest. “Since your casts are off, we can plan that date you agreed to for publicity.” He glanced at me with a twinkle in his eye. “Who should we choose? Blair?”

I glared at him and pointed to the doorway. “You can leave now. And let it be known that I never agreed to that date.”

He didn’t budge an inch, but I hadn’t thought he would. “Oh, yes you did.”

Sighing, I glanced up at the ceiling like this was the last thing I wanted to deal with today. “I think you should be the one to go on the date since you’re so excited about it.”

“Our potential users don’t want to see Rupert Allen, a washed-up bachelor, use the app. They want the owner, Mr. Eye-Candy himself.”

“I’m not sure which is more disturbing, that you just referred to me as eye-candy, or that you think you’re a washed-up bachelor.

“We’re heading off on tangents. Focus Seth. Think about what this publicity will do.”

“I’m not in the mood.”

Rupert leaned forward, a smile curling his lips. “What about Blair? She’s beautiful, confident, and you can’t deny she has charm.”

“Absolutely not. I’m surprised you even brought her up given you explained to her how impossible it is for us to go out.”

Rupert chuckled. “I was trying to help you out at the time, but I’ve combed through all the profiles and Blair’s stands out. I have no doubt she’ll perform well in front of the camera.”

“Oh, she’ll perform, all right, but that’s not necessarily a good thing.” I frowned. “Wait a second, she doesn’t have a profile on Dateable.”

“She certainly does.” His voice rose with glee as if he were enjoying my discomfort. “She signed up yesterday.”

I pinched the bridge of my nose, glad my fingers were finally free to resume the habit. “Tell me you didn’t encourage that.”

“I didn’t, but regardless, I’ve considered it, and she’s a good choice. Our audience will love her. Plus, she’ll be easier to deal with when it comes to contracts since we already know her.”

“Or it could be harder…”

“Just give it some thought.”

“You seem fixated with her. You should ask her out.”

He shrugged. “Maybe I will sometime, but right now, she’s perfect for—”

“No.
